Teatro do Mar was founded in Sines, Portugal, on 8 March 1986, by Julieta Aurora Santos (its Artistic Director and Director) and the late Actor and Director Vladimir Franklin.

The shows reflect, in their generality, essentially on themes whose focus is contemporary man and his existential condition in the face of an idea of progress and the consequent transformation of his identity and of his affective and cultural memories.

In a constant reflection and exploration of new artistic territories, the company develops a work of research and creation particularly focused on the public space (street theatre). Investing in its own dramaturgical creation - either from themes and/or adaptation of literary works - and in a multidisciplinary work, it crosses an essentially physical theatre with the circus, dance, animated forms, original music and new video technologies, in the search for a common and global meaning and the affirmation of a universal language, able to be understood by any kind of public.

The Theatre of the Sea has performed in over a hundred Festivals, with audiences of thousands of spectators, in Portugal and in various International Festivals in more than a dozen European countries and also in Brazil, having often had opening and closing honours.

Besides taking its shows all over the country and abroad, the Company assumes an important role as a cultural agent in its city and region, mainly through artistic creations with the community and through its Education Service.

In recognition for his work, he was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit of the City of Sines in 1999.

In 2001, its Artistic Director received the Prize of the Tourism Region of the Costa Azul, for the cultural services rendered to the region and the country.

Since its genesis, it has had an annual protocol with Sines Municipal Council and, since 1999, regular support from the Direção Geral das Artes/Ministério da Cultura.
